The Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea were joined when the Caledonian Canal was completed in 1822 having taken 17 years and was engineered by Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford.
The Caledonian Canal stretches 60 miles along the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness and it is now possible to sail the 60 miles from Loch Linnhe at Fort William, through Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness to reach Inverness. The five locks at Fort Augustus lift the water a total of 40ft.
This stunning Highlands waterway passes through a range of pretty towns and villages, lochs and countryside, providing a beautiful scenic setting to visitors.
A grand total of 29 locks dot the length of the canal.
